The Department of History being one among the founder departments on the campus is a distinguished center of learning has a long lineage of strengthening the academic fabric of the Maharaja Ganga Singh University. Founded in 2011, it is one of the leading and highly reputed centers of learning in the Faculty of Social Sciences. The Department has earned name and fame in the academic circles by ensuring quality teaching and learning atmosphere, innovative Student Centric planning and best performance in the overall functioning of the University.
Since its establishment, the Department of History has been carrying out quality research, training and development, organizing seminars, conferences and workshops which aim at reconstruction of the History of India and Rajasthan in particular. The significance of the Department of History is greatly enhanced due to the availability of archival records preserved in Rajasthan State Archives, Oriental Research Institute and Lalgarh Palace Library, Bikaner for the benefit of students and teachers to carry out original research. The Department has also organized a series of seminars, workshops, conference and training programmed on significant historical themes for benefit of students and the faculty. The Department regularly organizes the Maharaja Ganga Singh Memorial Lecture Series annually. Celebration of the Birth anniversaries of leading historical personalities like Swami Vivekananda, S.C. Bose etc. is part and parcel of the activities of this department. These are aimed at inculcating the feelings of patriotism and national integration among the students.
Currently there are two full time faculty members in the Department.
The Department of History has started job oriented professional courses at UG and PG level, which include B.A. Honors, M.A. in Genealogy and Community History and M.A. in Archaeology under SFS. The introduction of these courses has greatly attracted the students and resulted in their increase in the Department as well as employability too. The students of Archaeology and Genealogy have been assigned the task of conducting field based studies/cases study so as to construct the comprehensive study of the social, cultural and community history of Rajasthan. As a result of the introduction of these new courses, the outreach of the Department has significantly increased in the society.
